What actually happens on the marble

The heated marble slab in the centre of a Turkish hammam - the göbek taşı, or belly stone - is not decoration, and it is the stage the whole ritual is built on. You lie on it while the room's steam and the stone's radiant heat work together, and after ten or fifteen minutes the outermost layer of skin has softened enough that a kessa glove can lift it away cleanly.

That sequencing is the entire craft. Scrub too early and the exfoliation is harsh and ineffective; wait for the heat to do its part and the same glove removes an astonishing amount of dull, tired skin painlessly. Guests are usually surprised, and occasionally slightly appalled, by how much comes off.

The olive-soap foam that follows is the reward. Poured from a cloth pouch worked into clouds, it is warm, weightless and completely covering, and it rinses down with copper bowls of warm water.

Why it is the better first hammam

If you have never had a hammam and you are choosing between the Turkish and the Moroccan, take the Turkish one first. It is the more theatrical of the two: bigger room, more steam, more water, more happening. There is something to look at and something to feel at every stage, so the two hours pass without you ever wondering how much longer there is.

It is also the more social. Couples and friends share the marble room at no extra cost, which is unusual among spa treatments and is a large part of why groups book it. Nobody is behind a closed door alone.

The Moroccan hammam, by contrast, is quieter, gentler and more inward - beldi soap, ghassoul clay, argan oil, low steam. Many guests do the Turkish first and the Moroccan later in the week, which is the right order.

Bring a swimsuit if you have one; if not, everything else is provided, including towels and a locker. Eat lightly beforehand rather than heavily, drink water in the hours before, and skip it entirely if you have been drinking - heat and dehydration are a poor combination.

You will be warm for a while afterwards, and pleasantly heavy. Most guests want to sit with tea for twenty minutes rather than walk straight out into the afternoon, which is why the tea is included and nobody rushes you out of the relaxation area.

Your skin will feel different for two or three days - genuinely smoother, and more responsive to moisturiser. Do not shave or wax immediately afterwards, avoid strong sun for the rest of the day, and let the natural oils come back on their own.
