When classic beats gel

Gel is not automatically the better manicure, and there are three cases where classic is the right call. The first is time: forty-five minutes and EUR 25 against an hour and EUR 35. The second is flexibility - regular polish comes off in two minutes with remover, so a colour that suited the beach can become a different one for dinner.

The third is nail health. If your nails are already thin, peeling or recovering from months of back-to-back gel, a period in regular polish with proper cuticle care is genuinely restorative. The manicure itself is identical; only the finish differs.

It is also the sensible choice on the last day of a holiday, when you want to fly home neat without committing to three weeks of a holiday colour.

The care underneath the colour

Most of a classic manicure is not polish. Hands are sanitised and any old colour removed, then nails are trimmed and shaped to your preference and the cuticles are properly attended to - softened, pushed back and any excess trimmed with care rather than stripped.

Cuticles matter more than most people think: the cuticle is a seal against infection, and an over-trimmed one is worse than an untidy one. It is done conservatively here for exactly that reason.
